The sky is gray and more rain is moving in yet again. March typically begins a wet season after a dry winter. But this winter has been anything but dry.
Looking at long range averages, December through February is typically our driest period.
Rainfall typically spikes during March, then again in May when we see severe weather
We get another spike in August as rainfall from tropical systems moves in.
But, January broke the trend this year. Heavy rain fell causing flooding in Rockbridge County. Voluntary evacuations were issued and people left there homes due to high water along the James River.
Flooding also caused problems in Franklin County. More than 40 roads were closed including parts of Route 40 between Rocky Mount and Ferrum after several inches of rain fell.
The New River Valley also saw a lot of rain and snow melt that caused problems in Pulaski County. Back Creek came out of its bank causing water to cover Route 600.
Our next storm is moving in and heavy rainfall is in the forecast with many areas seeing the possibility of more than 2 inches over the next couple of days.
In years after big snow storms, at least one of the first four months of the year has well above average rainfall, we'll have to wait and see if that happens this month.
