Volunteers from around the Roanoke Valley joined hands to help stop hunger in Haiti. Around 1,300 people came out to pack meals for Haiti earthquake victims. Among the huge group at Patrick Henry High School, was Hector Clervoi who moved from Haiti to the United States 26 years ago. When he heard about the opportunity to help, he was excited because his mother, brother, and other family members are still there.
The large group worked in different shifts from 9am-7pm Sunday, bagging, sealing, and boxing over 285,000 meals to feed Haitians.
Joanne Tranquille proudly weighs out portions of the food. While she was born in this country, her parents are from Haiti, and has others in her family still there. Seeing people from all walks off life come together here in Roanoke to help strangers, is heartwarming for her.
"Stop Hunger Now", a group based out of Raleigh, North Carolina, helped local groups pull off Sunday's event. Since the earthquakes, they have sent 3.5 million meals to Haiti.
