It was a busy night at News Channel Ten on Tuesday for our No Bills Night. No Bills Night is when volunteers with the Young Lawyers Conference of the Virginia State Bar offer up legal advice to our viewers.
As soon as we posted the numbers to call, the phones were ringing off the hook. Most dealt with estate planning but a number of them were about bankruptcy. "I think it is very indicative of what the economy is like in the Roanoke Valley and in the area," says Roanoke Bar Association President Roy Creasy. He isn't surprised with the volume of calls. "People are intimidated by lawyers and shouldn't be."
The phone lines were open from 5-7pm. Between the two call-in locations, 240 people got through. However, in total almost 3500 people tried to call in for law advice. Creasy hopes in those two hours, they at least reached some callers before the problem became unable to be fixed. "If you had seen somebody and figured out what you could have done you may be in a better financial situation."
