ROANOKE - One of the first people to get to the scene of the Roanoke plane crash said a passenger told him he jumped out of the plane shortly before impact.
James Edwards, an employee at nearby Con-Way Freight, said he was having lunch when he heard what he thought was a loud explosion. The building also lost power.
Edwards, a trained volunteer firefighter/EMT from Patrick County, ran outside and saw smoke and flames.
Edwards said a man then stumbled toward him with an obvious head wound.
"He told me he had bailed out before impact, " Edwards said. "He said there was another man in the plane which was the pilot."
The Associated Press is reporting the pilot died as a result of his injuries.
Edwards said he stabilized the man until paramedics could get there.
Edwards also worked on the tragic Hendrick Motorsports plane crash at Bull Mountain, which was a recovery mission.
