LYNCHBURG - A 3-year-old is recovering after he was bitten by a neighborhood dog Wednesday morning, Lynchburg officials said.
Animal Warden Larry Faust said animal control officers received a call to Edinboro Avenue at about 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The child, Faust said, had been outside while a babysitter and the child’s mother were inside the house.
The medium-sized, mixed-breed dog bit the child multiple times, causing numerous puncture wounds but no serious lacerations, Faust said.
The dog was impounded by animal control, and Faust said officials had not been able to figure out what caused the attack.
Impounding animals in such cases is standard procedure, he said, in part so the animal can be evaluated for diseases.
Virginia law includes provisions for dealing with “dangerous dogs,” but Faust said no determinations had been made in the case Wednesday, as officers had not been able to speak with the owners of the dog.
