LEXINGTON - An inmate faces charges for escaping police custody in Lexington.

According to Lexington police, 35-year-old James Murphy assaulted an officer and escaped custody at the Stonewall Jackson hospital around 4:15 Sunday morning.

Members of the Rockbridge Sheriff's Office, State Police and the Lexington Fire Department helped with the search.

A State Police canine tracked Murphy to the Lexington Rescue Squad building where officers found a bay door open and a rescue squad car missing.

The vehicle was found by Botetourt County deputies near Troutville.

Murphy was arrested and charged with assault, escaping custody by force and grand larceny. He is being held at the Rockbridge County Regional Jail.
