About 80 acres of land have been scorched as of Tuesday evening, near Price Mountain in Montgomery County.
Emergency crews tell WSLS they got a call about the fire just before noon.
Denny McCarthy with the Virginia Department of Forestry says high winds, and moist ground has carried the fire nearly a mile.
Investigators believe the fire sparked on property owned by Virginia Tech, but has burned mostly private land.
A WSLS crew could see the smoke rising from the fire, as far away as the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
