ROANOKE - Tonight, the executive director of the Taubman Museum of Art unveiled a new plan for the future.
More than 400 people showed up for the town hall meeting.
Executive Director David Mickenberg acknowledged the Taubman was hit hard by the recession, but says he's optimistic and realistic for the future.
He wants the Taubman to be viewed as an art center, not just a museum.
His plan includes expanding art education, working closer with schools and hiring five part-time curators.
Moving forward, he says when people walk in, he wants them to see art immediately instead of empty walls. "There will be art on the walls up there. There will be murals. We are talking about suspending art from the ceiling."
Community members also gave their suggestions on ways to improve such as creating more parking and free admission.
Mickenberg says the museum plans to lower its admission price and allow students with identification to get in free.
He says this town hall meeting is just the first step of many to get input from the people the museum is here to serve.
