Stimulus Tracker: Montgomery County

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Montgomery County received $58 million in stimulus funds.

$3 million of those dollars went towards a grant to help train workers in the green energy industry.

Workers interested in green energy can find all the training they need under one roof.

"Anything can be done when it comes to this but now I know how to do it a lot better," said Bobby Jeffries.

Jeffries works at an energy and weatherization company in Blacksburg.  He is training at the New River Center for Energy and Research Training to improve his skills.  He is one of dozens of people who are benefiting from the multi million dollar grant.

NRCERT has a lab where a number of skills are taught, including how to seal an attic bypass.  Many of the trainees worked in completely different careers before.

"Before this I did maintenance and before that I worked in a medical lab for research," said Jeffries

"A lot of folks were affected by jobs lost in auto manufacturing sector, so construction is sort of taking place of these disappearing manufacturing jobs," said Kim Straum, grants coordinator.

In the last year, the center has received more than $11 million in stimulus money.

NCERT keeps in close communication with surrounding local businesses to see what they want from their workers.

"They are realizing there is a net gain overall that they will be able to employ these people," said Mark Jackson, NCERT Director.
