Christiansburg town leaders vote to bring in budgeting help. The town will be paying an estimated $22,000 to the Center for Prioritized Budgeting.
"They will help us better prioritize our budget, deciding what our money should be spent on," said Barry Helms, interim Town Manager.
The money is coming from the town reserves. We spoke with several people in the town. Some tell us they support the plan, others tell us it is money wasted.
"We are doing this to protect our budget from the long term impact from the economic downturn," said Helms.
Helms tells us the money is well spent because it will teach leaders different ways to keep the budget in line.
He explains this process will also allow for public input.
"We will send out surveys and scorecards for the public to fill out," said Helms. "This way we can take a look at what is important to them before we decided how the money is spent."
The town manager and treasurer will take some of the training through a computer based program.
