The Roanoke Rescue Mission served Thanksgiving dinner for one thousand Thursday afternoon.
More than 100 volunteers cooked and served 95 turkeys, 700 pounds of mashed potatoes and 200 pounds of stuffing.
Between 300 and 400 people spend the night at the mission each year.
The mission raises about two-thirds of its yearly budget during the holidays.
"We're not in black yet. We're in the red.", says Joy Sylvester-Johnson. "We expect to be in the black by the end of the year if everybody does what they usually do."
For the first time in 62 years, there are more women and children staying at the mission than men.
