It was quite a sight to take in Thursday. Thousands of people flooded downtown Roanoke for the 5th annual Drumstick Dash. The money the participants raised will make a major impact on the people who rely on the Roanoke Rescue Mission
“We provide food, emergency shelter, clothing and medical care,” said Rescue Mission Director, Lee Clark.
The total budget for the mission is $4 million a year. Thursday, the Drumstick Dash brought in $250,000. Last year, the event raised $212,000.
Clark says the rescue mission will put every penny towards basic things like heat and electricity. “Utilities cost about $400,000 a year.”
The extra money will also help support the rescue mission clinic. “That has been an area that has seen a big increase for us.”
In five years, the event has grown from 1500 to 11,500 participants.
In order to keep up with the growth, Lee says they will look into more starting lines, better traffic control, and a more streamlined registration system.
After all, they are expecting 15 thousand people next year.
