Seven left homeless after Roanoke house fire

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Seven people are left homeless after a fire in Roanoke.

Roanoke Fire-EMS says the flames sparked early Friday morning, in the 400 block of Melrose Avenue.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found thick smoke coming from all sides of the home.

The people who lived inside got out safely.  However, firefighters had a difficult time understanding them because they only spoke Spanish.

"My initial personnel on the scene said some of the occupants were pointing upstairs and very adamant.  So my people did not know whether the fire was upstairs, or whether there were people still in the structure," said Roanoke Fire-EMS Deputy Chief Ralph Tartaglia.

The Fire Marshal's Office believes an overload of wires is to blame.

Firefighters add that the home did not have smoke detectors, and that may have limited the damage.
