A Bedford man was arrested Thursday and charged with felony murder in connection with a fatal methadone overdose in February, Bedford Police Department Chief Jim Day said Friday.
Day said the investigation began on Feb. 7 when Matthew Stewart Hamilton, 26, was found dead at a home in the 1000 block of Quarles Street.
After further investigation and the medical examiner’s report was released, he said, police believed 33-year-old Jason Carroll Mann was sufficiently responsible for Hamilton’s death to charge him under Virginia’s felony murder law. The law allows for the charge if a person dies in the course of another person committing a felony.
Mann was charged in June with three counts each of felony possession with intent to distribute a schedule I or II drug and selling drugs within 1,000 feet of a school. One set of charges stems from Feb. 6, court records showed.
Mann, who is also listed at addresses in Roanoke and Warrenton in unrelated court records, is scheduled for a first appearance on the felony murder charge in Bedford County General District Court Wednesday. His preliminary hearing on the drug charges is set for Nov. 3.
He is jailed at the Bedford Adult Detention Center.
