A Craig County mother who knows how dealing with a child fighting cancer feels, plans to make a donation from her heart and head to help other cancer patients.
Melina Brown and her son Levi's story began six years ago. Levi's headaches eventually led to doctors finding a tumor in the back of his head.
After surgeons removed the tumor, Levi had to relearn how to eat, walk, and talk all over again.
"While he was re-learning all of those things he was going through radiation and chemotherapy for his cancer," Melina said.
Melina invited me and my photographer with her, on a recent check-up for Levi. During our interview, Levi's pediatric oncologist, Dr. Mandy Atkinson, came in with some good news. Levi's latest MRI scans showed his tumor was not coming back.
That was a relief for Melina, who still feels concern every time she takes Levi for his check-up.
"We hope and pray for the best but I believe that you have to let yourself imagine the worst possible news and that way if it ever happens it wouldn't completely destroy you," Melina told me.
Dr. Atkinson explained to Levi what improvement he made in a year's time. "You must have done a lot of therapy because the last time we examined you - you were not this strong I can promise you that," Dr. Atkinson told Levi.
He will need that strength to be part of a special, national fundraiser with his mom. It will be in Los Angeles, as part of the "Stand Up to Cancer" telethon that will air on NBC and WSLS September 10th at 8:00 p.m.
During the telethon, Melina will be one of 46 "mommas" who will have their heads shaved. Their goal is to raise awareness about childhood cancer.
Levi's younger sister Kaylee and older brother Ethan also plan to make the trip.
