An Appomattox County grand jury on Tuesday indicted former sheriff’s office administrative assistant Sandra Covington on 20 counts of grand larceny and 20 counts of money laundering.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Darrel Puckett said the charges were related to theft from the sheriff’s office from June 2007 through February. He did not specify an amount.
Covington is set for trial on Nov. 23 in Appomattox County Circuit Court.
Also Tuesday, the court set a two-day trial for Travis Wayne Kerr on March 10 and 11. Kerr is charged with malicious wounding of a two-month-old baby in December.
There were no developments in the capital murder case against Spout Spring resident Christopher Speight, who is accused in the deaths of eight people in a January shooting rampage. Speight is hospitalized in a state mental health institution after a judge ruled he was incompetent to stand trial. A report on efforts to restore his competency is not due until late December, Puckett said.
