Viewers Voice: Salem Red Sox fan wants more coverage

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Friday was opening night for the Salem Red Sox and one viewer thinks we should give them a little more coverage.

Art Thommen emailed, “We are so fortunate to have a wonderful minor league baseball team and a beautiful stadium. Why is there a terrible lack of coverage of their games and where they stand in the Carolina League? In the past, there was even taped coverage. For the past couple of years, there has been next to nothing shown on WSLS. You wouldn't even know we had a team. What gives?”

WSLS responds: Art, thanks for the comment. We agree with you, our area is lucky to have a quality team like the Salem Red Sox. And that's why we give them a lot of coverage. As an example, last year, we were live at their games numerous times. Sports Director John Appicello had results of all of their games with video highlights of most home games. Additionally, we did news stories there at least a half dozen times last year including a Big Brother Big Sisters event at one game, several weather stories related to the games, and the financial impact the team has on the area. And, last Friday we had coverage of opening night in most of our newscasts.

We got an interesting question emailed from Andrea. She wrote, “Hi Jay. I recently bought an iPod touch and wanted to download a WSLS app. After searching the store and finding nothing, I went on WSLS.com to find out if you had an app. According to the site you do have one. There was even a link to open iTunes to get the app. But when I click it, iTunes tells me there is no such app. Is there an app for WSLS?”

I checked with our web guy for the answer to this. He recommends that you go to the app store on your iPod and do a search for “On Your Side.” By the way, we sent that information to Andrea, and she emailed back that it worked.

It's spring and with that comes severe weather. We're already getting some emails, calls and notes about our coverage, including this Facebook posting from Valerie: “I was up late last night watching the storm coverage and the possible tornado in Martinsville. I think Jeff did a great job covering this even at 1:30 this morning!”
