Roanoke takes a stand against racism.
A diversity celebration was held Friday at noon at the Roanoke Police Department Training Academy.
Speakers included Sheriff Octavia Johnson, who recalled going to school just after desegregation in 1965.
The event, sponsored by the YWCA, encourages conversations about personal experiences.
"We live in a wonderful city," said event organizer Sandi Gibson. "We feel that when people work together and understand each other and promote tolerance, we're going to have a better city."
Vice Mayor Sherman Lea read a proclamation declaring the day "Stand Against Racism Day" in the city.
This is the third year for the event.
