Candace McLain is a single mother of three. McLain tells WSLS, she's feeling the pressure to make sure her kids have all the school supplies they need.
"Times are kind of hard for me it's rough," McLain says.
Despite the tough times, McLain knows just how important getting her kids off to the right start is.
"Education is huge," McLain says, "It is really, really, really huge and I'm no teacher."
That's why she's planning to head to this year's "Back to School Blast," organized in part by The Roanoke Rescue Mission.
Volunteer coordinator Leslie Littlefield says their goal is to make sure every kid walks out of the Roanoke Civic Center on August 13th, with a backpack full of school supplies.
If you want to help, Littlefield says basic school supplies are also welcome, but backpacks are what they need most.
"Right now we have about about 1,350 book bags," Littlefield says. "So that means we need 1,650 book bags."
The Rescue Mission will accept donations until Sunday, August 7th.
