Freshmen year was only a week away for 14 year-old Jessie Kessinger, who had dreams of mixing it up with the boys on the football field.
"She wanted to get out there on the field and play rough and tumble, but I mean she was sweet, she was, child was in the choir," said Leonard Kessinger, her father.
But those dreams all changed Friday, after what Radford Police believe was a tragic accident. Investigators say she was fatally shot by her ten year old brother.
"I said well son, you didn't hate her, you wasn't mad at her, y'all wasn't fighting it was just a horrible accident son and I love you no matter what," said Kessinger to his son.
Police could not comment on the details of the case, however kessinger tells WSLS his 10 year old son went to look for his gun when he heard about the ongoing manhunt for Edward DeHart.
Kessinger says his hunting rifles are always locked inside a gun cabinet
"I taught 'em gun safety from the time my son was 4 and my daughter was 7. We hunted together, we'd go to shooting ranges together, I mean, I showed them the correct way," said Kessinger.
But he says his son felt the urge to protect his sister and found the key.
The thing he says he will miss most about his teenage daughter is the look she gave him when he walked in each day from work.
"She'd open the door and look at me with a big old cheesy grin and say hey old daddy and I ain't going to hear that no more," said Kessinger.
Radford Commonwealth's Attorney Chris Rehak said Monday that he is still reviewing the case to decide if charges will be filed.
