Using fundraising ideas such as "spirit days" and "turkey teachers," students at Rockbridge County's Maury River Middle School raised more than $400 for Roanoke's Ronald McDonald House.
The charity provides temporary housing and support for hundreds of families every year with children admitted to the Carilion Children's Hospital.
The students also gathered supplies such as canned goods.
"It's such an important charity," said Maury River Middle School eighth grader Mikala Stafford. "We wanted to help somehow and we figured that was the best way we can do it."
The "turkey teachers" fundraiser entailed students paying a dime or a quarter to put on or take off feathers from turkeys hung up in each teacher's classroom.
