A golden eagle is soaring in the skies over Virginia once again, after being released on the Blue Ridge Parkway Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildlife Center of Virginia and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries say the bird was originally caught in a trap in Craig County on January 9th. Conservation Police Officer J.W. Koloda rescued the bird.
Since then, the center has been working to help heal and rehabilitate the bird. That rehabilitation included surgery to amputate one of the golden eagle's toes.
"It was really successful and a quick surgery, and we were able to get the bird back out to a flight pen five days after the surgery itself," said Dr. Dave McRuer, Director of Veterinary Services for the Wildlife Center of Virginia.
The center released the bird about 12 miles north of Roanoke on the Blue Ridge Parkway, at Harvey's Knob. A chorus of cheers sent the golden eagle on its way back to the wild.
The center plans to track the golden eagle with a GPS transmitter. The center plans to post updates on its website (click here).
