Last week, Virginia Tech athletics were in the news for a variety of reasons, from big basketball games to coaching changes for the football team. And, David of Roanoke has had enough.
He called to say, “Is there anything in this world that he doesn't cover for Virginia Tech? Is there a show that he can possibly get through a newscast without doing anything about Virginia Tech? Is he being paid by Virginia Tech? We are sick to death of looking at him talking about Virginia Tech.”
WSLS responds: David, thanks for the comment. It's a complaint we've heard before. We cover Virginia Tech because it's in our viewing area. Should we have left out the score of the Virginia Tech - Maryland game? Should we have ignored two big coaching decisions for the football team, including Coach Beamer hiring his son as the Running Backs Coach? Those are big stories for our area that interest a lot of people and they deserve coverage. Finally, no, Sports Director John Appicello is not paid by Virginia Tech.
A story about the VDOT budget and the estimated and real cost of 105 road projects had a typo that several viewers caught, including Mr. Howe from Fairfield.
He said, “They said estimated 900 million dollars, yet the number you flashed up in the screen was only 900,000. And right below it was another number that was verbal, 750 million and again flashed on the screen was 750,000.”
WSLS responds: You're right. Our producer got the wrong numbers on the screen. The script Karen read was correct, meaning VDOT expected the projects to cost around $900 million, but the bids came in just over $750 million.
Finally, Richard Gilmore of Lynchburg called to say, “I certainly appreciate y'all every evening. 'Cause it is hectic out there and then I come in and see you all and y'all are just normal. Y'all don't put on no strange talking accents. Y'all are just talk normal, and get on with the news and laugh a little bit.”
