Last week the Virginia Tech coaching carrousel continued, dominating the headlines for a day. And that dominated the calls and emails we got into the newsroom.
We've stated the WSLS position regarding the amount of Virginia Tech coverage we provide in our newscasts countless times. I won't do it again here, but did want to give people on both sides of this debate another chance to sound off.
And we heard it all starting with the anti-Virginia Tech crowd.
An anonymous called from Bland County said, “Y'all cover more sports from Virginia Tech than anything, whether it's basketball, baseball or football. I'm sick of hearing of it. I mean, there's other schools around here y'all could be interviewing and stuff. Come on guys, get with it.”
Another viewer called to say, “Jay always uses the excuse that Tech is in the viewing area. Well, I have breaking news for Jay and the other Virginia Tech worshippers. There are at least six more schools in the viewing area: Roanoke College, Hollins University, Lynchburg College, Randolph College, Sweet Briar, and of course, Liberty. So, stop saying you dwell on Tech because it is in the viewing area. That doesn't work anymore.”
And, Missy Isner from Roanoke emailed, “I have to agree that your newscast is nothing but Virginia Tech coverage. We have nicknamed your news "Virginia Tech Television." Not only in sports coverage, but other stories as well. It seems like anything that is happening, some sort of interjection of Virginia Tech is added. It's crazy! I understand that it's in our viewing area, but please respect the fact that not EVERYONE in this viewing area are VT followers. It makes me sick honestly.”
And then there’s the other side.
CJ Hairston of Roanoke called to say, “You know, if you want UVA, you go to Charlottesville. If you want anything else, you move there. You are in Roanoke, Virginia, and this is Hokie Country. And, we are proud to be Hokies and we appreciate you guys at Channel 10 doing what's on Virginia Tech to keep us at-point with our team and with our Hokies.”
And Ronnie Rice of Bedford said, “After spending the biggest part of my adult life working in Lynchburg and listening to them Wahoos rag about everything they did, it's goo to hear the news reporters talk about Tech. I'm a die-hard Tech fan. I don't care who knows it.”
As always, thanks for all the comments!
