Hollins University says it has met a $5 million fundraising challenge goal, set by an alumnus.
Back in April of 2010, Jane Parke Batten promised a matching donation of $5 million, if Hollins could raise that amount by December of 2013. The university says it has beaten that deadline.
The money will go to enhance scholarships for students who want to take part in Hollins' Batten Leadership Institute, earn a certificate in leadership studies, and for the school's most outstanding students. Jane and Frank Batten originally donated $2 million back in 1995 to establish the Batten Scholars program at Hollins, and made additional donations since to help pay for the leadership institute.
"This challenge is just the latest example of the Batten family's strong commitment to supporting women's education and leadership opportunities, and we extend our deepest gratitude to Jane and the more than 820 alumnae and friends of Hollins whose generosity made this achievement possible," said Hollins President Nancy Gray, in a news release. "The Battens have had an enormous impact on Hollins, and we are delighted at how this challenge inspired others to help make a difference in the lives of young women."
