The New River Valley Dixie Baseball team came into Tuesday's game undefeated in the double elimination State Dixie Tournament. With a team made up of players from four different districts, the bond on the field had to happen fast. "We have been working really hard over the last few weeks to get these guys together. They have played as a team and really come together well," said head coach Rocky Huff.
"It's been great. We have really worked together. We spend alot of time together on and off the field," added catcher Allen Huff.
On the field Tuesday morning, they would trail the Amherst squad by one run in the fifth inning when Eli Straw crosses the plate to tie the game at 3. They would get one more in the inning when Allen Huff picked up a huge hit to bring home Luke Wheeler and give them a 4-3 lead. After an hour delay for rain, the NRV team closed out the game handing Amherst their second loss and eliminating them from the tournament.
With the win, the team will move to Thursday's games for a chance to head to South Carolina for the Dixie World Series. "It would be great to see them get the chance to play the type of talent that comes to the World Series, and to represent your state," said Rocky Huff.
The NRV team will face the winner of Tuesday night's game between Grayson County and Halifax.
