Our coverage of the Memorial Day shooting spree and the subsequent investigation into how Franklin County Sheriff Ewell Hunt handled the situation has many voicing their opinions this week.
Some say it's time for hunt to go, like Terry, who said, “I think he should be removed from office because he is the sheriff and he is supposed to protect and serve and not do what he did and it is not right."
Vic Ham of Elliston called to say, "Smacks of the good ole boys club to me. Officers of the law should not only be above the law, they should be shining examples of how the law is upheld and how the legal system works. He should have recused himself and been put on administration leave just like an officer involved shooting, immediately."
And we heard this from Harriett Harris of Roanoke: "His 9-1-1 call. He was so intentional as far as not giving any specifics. I think he was covering for this guys. // He should not resign. He should be terminated."
Others had differing views on how we've covered the story, specifically our story on the victim Jennifer Agee's back child support bills.
This woman complained, “When I read your report on the web saying the victim owned the killer back child support, my jaw dropped. How dare you make an excuse for cold blooded murder. All this violence against women must stop and it never will as long as it is taking lightly."
But, Scott Mercy of Roanoke had a different take, saying, "How come nobody is going after, saying anything about the judge or the court system? This woman owed $24,000 in back child support. After $3,000 it becomes a federal offense. She should have been locked up in jail. If she was in jail she would have never been killed."
WSLS responds: Thanks for the comments. We covered the child support issue because it added some context to what might have happened. at no time did we offer that as a justification. We also did several stories on the victim's life, talking with friends and coworkers who said Agee was a bright, friendly person who will be greatly missed.
Finally, our newly launched 10.3 MeTV channel, which features a host of classic TV shows like Cheers and MASH, is a hit with some of our viewers.
Derwin Hobb said, “Thank you for putting up Channel 10.3. I can't afford cable because I'm disabled. I am 54 years old. I am just glad you put that up there. I like having channel 10. I hope you keep it on late, late, late at night. But, if you don't thank you anyway for getting a new channel on that comes in better and since people don't have cable like me."
