Viewers Voice: WSLS managers act on viewer's suggestion

Josh Robertson has a suggestion for our 5pm newscast.

He posted on our WSLS Facebook wall, “I have a pretty cool idea for Channel 10. How about, starting the 5 o'clock news at 5:00, rather than 4:57, or 4:58. Trivial I know, but some of us watch other stations other than WSLS and we watch shows until the end. When they go off, we switch over to Channel 10 and half of the first story is already finished.”

WSLS responds: Josh, You’re not alone in this thought, so much so our managers agreed. Last week, they reprogrammed the commercial break times so that our 5pm news now starts at exactly 5pm. Thanks for the idea.

Another viewer doesn’t like the graphics we use in our newscasts.

Logan emailed, “Recently channel 10 started this flashy graphics of the logo swirling around, seemingly without any reason, sometime two or three times while presenting the same news clip. As a result, I stopped watching Channel 10 news. It bothers my eyes and breaks my concentration. It makes the news shorter when you add up all the seconds it is taking.”

WSLS responds: Thanks for the note. We appreciate your perspective. We use these graphics to help transition between stories and different pieces of video. They also help pick up the pacing of our newscast. Hopefully, they’ll start to grow on you.

Another viewer feels like we’re missing something in our sports coverage.

Michael Hoke said, “Y'all don't cover NASCAR. You say you cover things in our area. You cover a lot of Virginia Tech stuff. And, it just seems y'all don't cover NASCAR very much at all. That's what the rednecks around here like.”

WSLS responds: Thanks for the call, Michael. And, you’re right. NASCAR is a big deal in Southwest and Central Virginia. Because of that, we do a lot of NASCAR coverage. In fact, in the two weeks leading up to the kick off of this year’s season we had a series of reports on most of the drivers. And, Sports Director John Appicello includes highlights of all the races.

Finally, Tiffany Sink of Franklin County called to say, “I'm sick of hearing about people complain about you guys' program. I love the program. If they don't like it, don't watch it.”
