The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) is partnering with regional power companies, to help replace the loss of forest land that comes with building large electrical transmission lines.
One of those transmission lines was built in the Dixie Caverns area of Roanoke County.
On Tuesday, Appalachian Power presented the VDOF with a check of nearly $42,000 to help offset the nearly 100 acres of forest land that had to be cut down for the projects.
The money will go toward tree planting, forest land conservation, and even some small private properties.
“We will notify land owners that need work done, and some may need financial assistance to get the work done. There will also be land owners that come to us to place land in conservation easements, and we will start working with them and say we can help them out,” said Carl Garrison, State Forester of Virginia.
Of the 82 acres of forest land cut down, 48 were in Roanoke County, and 34 were in Botetourt County.
