It was a day of pampering for some local women in honor of Mother's Day.
Women staying at the Roanoke Rescue Mission's Women's Center were treated to manicures and haircuts today. Local stylists and manicurists donated their time and talent to pamper the women. When it was all done, they had their picture taken and were given a keepsake key chain by photographer Michael Vest. In the past, women have given it as a gift for Mother's Day.
The "Day of Beauty" is part of First Presbyterian Church's witness and service program. It's the third year the church has organized the event. The women we talked to say it was a real treat.
"It's very seldom that you get anything free," said Phyllis Sale who had her nails done. "So for someone to take time out of their busy schedules to pamper us, it's a great blessing to me."
Sale has been at the women's center for about two months but is about to move into her own apartment. She says the fresh coat of polish on her nails is just what she needs as she gets off on a fresh start.
The women were also given lunch and gift bags that included make-up and other toiletries.
160 women stayed at the center Monday night, including 49 children.
