People working on do-it-yourself projects can often find bargains at the Danville-Pittsylvnaia County Habitat for Humanity ReStore, at 503 Hughes St. in Danville.
Currently, the store has a lot of doors, windows and tile — and could use some donations of gently used appliances and cabinets, according to Donna Redd, Habitat for Humanity’s development director.
“We sell new and used building materials to the public at discounted prices,” Redd said. “We use the money raised from that to buy the materials we need for our new construction and rehab buildings.”
A recent tour of the store showed a huge selection of paint, stains and miscellaneous painting supplies; a good selection of tile; plumbing supplies; a corner cabinet that could be used in a kitchen or bath; insulation; electrical supplies — including box upon box of 5/8-inch cable staples and a lot more items a do-it-yourselfer could use to cut the cost of a project.
Redd said they are always looking for donations — anything left over from building projects, such as flooring, lumber, sheetrock, architectural items, lighting and countertops.
All donations are tax deductible, Redd said.
Right now, the ReStore is only open from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday and Fridays, but donations can be accepted throughout the day. Redd said donors can call (434) 793-3630 to make sure someone is there to help unload, or to schedule pickup of donated materials.
“We could really use some more volunteers to help with the store,” Redd said. “I’d love to be open on Saturday, or at least extend the hours on Wednesday and Friday.”
Redd recommends visiting the store often, as stock changes from day to day. Calling to find out what is available may not always work, as a comprehensive list is not kept.
“It’s more of a come in a wander around kind of place,” Redd said.
