GILES CO. - The Giles County School Board plans to make a decision next month on the Ten Commandments.
Community members put a new idea on the table tonight.
Bobby Lilly, who is a parent, spoke for supporters.
He says putting the Ten Commandments back in schools isn't for religious reasons, but historical.
He's proposing adding eight other documents to the display including Lady Justice, Bill of Rights to the United States Constitution, Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, Declaration of Independence, Virginia Declaration of Rights, Mayflower Compact, Magna Carta and the National Anthem.
"We're looking at all of the influences that played upon the founding fathers as they developed the initial frameworks for our laws and government," said Lilly. "We're trying to do that in a way that is respectful."
Board members are waiting until June 7th to make a decision. Chairman J.B. Buckland says they need time to research and speak with their attorney.
On June 7, he hopes to put the issue to rest once and for all. "Very important, we need to move on. We're here to educate students."
