Teachers sweated it out in the sun, while students played in their end of the year field day celebration at Craig County Schools on Tuesday morning.
Inside, high school students sweated it out, becuase many classrooms don’t have air conditioning.
"As soon as the students start piling in, it's gets a little warm,” said English teacher Marcus Phelps.
He had a fan going, and kept the windows open in the morning, but had to close them after 9 a.m. to keep the heat out.
Many instructors also taught in the dark, to lower the temperature an extra degree or two. There was also a very humid, muggy feeling in many classrooms.
"It's not a real good environment for students to learn in and it makes it a real challenge for the teachers and the students,” said Principal Dan Bowman.
He says they've made special arrangements for students taking SOL's, including moving them to air conditioned rooms.
"We want to make sure our students have the best testing environment that they can have, so we've moved out testing to the morning, and made sure that gets taken care of,” said Bowman.
It was 87 degrees outside, and who knows how hot inside, when students went home early at 12:30 p.m.
With only a week of school left, Principal Bowman says they're going to have to tough out this heat wave the best way they can.
