Republicans to gather in Dan River Region for get-out-the-vote rally

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The 20th District state Senate race is one of the biggest in the commonwealth, especially for Republicans.

So Gov. Bob McDonnell, U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt, R-5th District, and other state Republican Party members are having a campaign rally to make sure people go out and vote on Nov. 8 — and that they vote Republican.

McDonnell and Hurt will be joined by Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and Republican members of the General Assembly on Sunday at the Blairs Fire and Rescue Department from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will a free hot dog dinner for people who attend.

The rally will be urging people to vote for Bill Stanley, the Republican candidate for the 20th District, who is facing a close race with Democratic incumbent Roscoe Reynolds. Stanley’s campaign has raised more money than any other Senate campaign in Virginia in an attempt to unseat Reynolds.

Stanley will be joined by 15th District state Sen. Frank Ruff, R-Mecklenburg County, and Delegate Danny Marshall, R-Danville, both of whom are running for reelection unopposed.

The Republicans will stump at rallies for other races across Virginia, but coming out for Stanley’s race was one of the most important, according to people with the campaign.

“We’re the top race in Virginia,” said John Findlay, a media representative for Stanley’s campaign. “If we don’t win this race it is hard to take a path to retake the Virginia Senate.”

In the Senate, Democrats have a slim 22-18 majority. This election gives Republicans a chance to try to gain new Senate seats and win control of the entire General Assembly, since they already have a comfortable majority in the House of Delegates and a Republican governor.

Reynolds’ campaign manager said that U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Virginia, would be visiting the district Saturday for a Democratic campaign rally with Reynolds and Delegate Ward Armstrong but the details have not been released yet.

Although it is not required, the Stanley campaign asks people to RSVP for this event if they would like to attend by contacting John at jfind1@gmail.com or (540) 243-0834.
