It's the people who camp outside stores, or who get up really early, or as in this year-- will stay up late-- to get the so called door buster deals at big box stores black Friday we often hear about.
This year, there's another message from mom and pop shops. "It sends a message, "Small Business Saturday" that we're here, we have plenty available for you downtown," said Laureen Blakemore with Downtown Blacksburg, Inc.
Virginia's small business association, the National Federation of Independent Business says this year's holiday shopping season is crucial to the state's small businesses which are struggling to rebound from the weak economy. The organization is trying to kick start sales with "Small Business Saturday," asking you to invest in your community by shopping local the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
"It's a good day to get people to pledge and come down and find out what there is. It gets people coming back again," Blakemore said. She and Downtown Blacksburg, Inc have pushed a "Go Local" campaign the last six years. This week, the group revised its campaign, giving"Buy Eat, Live Local" a fresh look.
"People do what's convenient sometimes," she said. "I think it's just good to have a reminder. It's definitely out there now."
NFIB says the number one problem facing small businesses is poor sales but supporting them at the holidays will pay dividends throughout the year.
