As a result of the outbreak of severe weather last week from Tropical Storm Lee, our Storm Team had to break into regular programming to relay urgent weather alerts including flash flood and tornado warnings.
It was a move that angered some.
Elaine Seiler wrote, "Your weather alerts are totally out of control. Break in IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY."
And Mark Mekanik emailed, "PLEASE STOP GRANDSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have broken into major network TV to warn of a tornado in this area. I have just heard, as of 8:43pm that the Moneta area should brace for a tornado. Are you KIDDING????????????????????? I am in Moneta. No such luck. I have had to endure this for 3 hours. Please, get that bozo OFF the air. Your station is GRANDSTANDING! Are you this desperate?"
WSLS Responds: Thanks for the emails. i know missing your favorite shows is frustrating... but i don't know how much more of an emergency we can have than a tornado. We had numerous warning throughout the night including what later turned out to be a confirmed tornado in Carroll County. You might not have had a tornado over your roof in Lynchburg, but does that mean we should simply ignore our viewers in Southside or the NRV who were under a warning?
Another viewer had a different take on our coverage.
Greg Johnson of Roanoke emailed, "I just wanted to thank you for the storm tracking last night. I'm a transplant to Roanoke from Cana and was watching the news and weather before going to bed. When you started showing the rotation in the storm in Cana and said it was moving along Highway52 I called my 80 year old mom. She was in the bed and I told her of the storm and she went to her basement. She lives only 4 houses up from where the gas station is that was hit. I kept her on the phone and I could hear her saying, 'I can hear it, I can hear it.' Just wanted to thank you for that coverage and for helping keep my mom safe."
And finally, our NASCAR coverage had one viewer very happy.
Joe Wright of Roanoke called to say, "I want to thank you for your NASCAR coverage. NASCAR racing is the number one spectator sport in America. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
