Norfolk light rail success spurs talk of expansion

»  Comments | Post a Comment

NORFOLK — The success of Norfolk's new light rail has prompted city officials to discuss extending the service to Norfolk Naval Station.

Three proposed extensions to the base were discussed this week during the City Council's annual retreat in Smithfield. One extension would run past Old Dominion University.

The 7.4-mile rail line, called The Tide, opened in August. Daily ridership is about 5,140 riders. City officials had projected a daily ridership of 2,920.

But it could be years before light rail service is extended. The process to get federal approval and funding for The Tide's construction took 11 years.
