ROANOKE, VA --

Carilion Clinic has plans to add a third helicopter, Lifeguard 12.

Officials say they're seeing an increase in sick patients needing air transport. They've been planning the addition for about a year. Carilion hopes to keep Lifeguard 12 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, but are waiting for approval from the City of Lexington.

The hope is to eventually move Lifeguard 10 out of Roanoke to a hanger at West Lake in the Smith Mountain Lake area. That would expand services, and shorten response times to Franklin County, as well as parts of Southside.
