State Police say the traffic back-up from the deadly tractor trailer truck crash on Interstate 81 in Botetourt County on Thursday, contributed to a separate deadly crash in Rockbridge County.
Sergeant Robert Carpentieri, of State Police's Salem Division, tells WSLS the crash took place around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, on I-81 southbound, near the Natural Bridge exit.
Troopers say a Ford F-150 pick-up truck hit the back of a 2010 Freightliner flatbed tractor-trailer, while it was stopped with its hazard lights flashing.
The crash killed the driver of the pick-up. Sgt. Carpentieri said he was a 58-year-old man from North Bend, Washington. Family members of the victim had not been notified as of Thursday night, and State Police withheld the man's name until the family could be told.
Sgt. Carpentieri added that the driver of the tractor-trailer, Artis Buckley Jr., of West Wego, Louisiana, suffered non-serious injuries, and was not taken to the hospital.
