He didn't hear any sirens or see any flashing lights, but when a car pulled up next to Dave Voorhees on Thursday afternoon at Exit 137 off of Interstate 81, with who appeared to be a police officer driving, he pulled over.
"Where I grew up, if a cop tells you to pull over, you pull over. Whether he's in his personal car, or not,” Voorhees said. “From what I understand, a cop is never off duty."
Voorhees claims the man pulled up next to his car, and yelled to pull over just off the exit on Wildwood Road.
When he did, Voorhees said the officer demanded he get out of his car. When Voorhees did not immediately get out, the officer allegedly pulled him out.
Voorhees said the officer then pushed him up against his own car and grabbed his neck.
Voorhees two teenage kids were in the backseat and watched the alleged incident.
"It scared the hell out of me to be honest, because I had my two children in the vehicle with me,” Voorhees said. “I didn't know what was going on."
After the officer left, Voorhees said he called 911 to report the incident.
Roanoke County Police confirmed Friday that they are investigating within their department. However, at this point it is still an open investigation.
Thursday night, officers from Salem and Roanoke County came to Voorhees’ house to take a statement. That's where Voorhees said he recognized the uniform he saw earlier that day.
"The Roanoke County Lieutenant pulled up, and he got out of his car,” Voorhees said. “Me and my daughter looked at each other, and said 'that's the uniform right there.'"
Voorhees said depending on the outcome of the investigation, he will consider pressing criminal charges.
