It was man and man's best friend who crashed the superbowl of commercials Sunday.
Jonathan Friedman of Virginia Beach created this Doritos ad showing Huff, a 120-pound great dane bribing a man with the chips to cover his tracks after the neighbor's cat went missing. It's one of more than 6,000 ads entered in the company's consumer created commercial contest. Jonathan was one of five finalists watching Super Bowl XLVI from a luxury suite, not knowing whether his ad would make an appearance.
"During the first half I paid more attention to the screens in the suite than I did to the game," he said during an interview from Indianapolis. "Yeah, I was on pins and needles."
Not only did it air, to his amazement. "Total shock. I totally flipped out. I couldn't believe it," he said.
"Man's Best Friend" scored, coming in number one on the USA Today ad meter rankings. It was great news for the graphic designer but even better that the ranking fetched him a one million dollar cash prize. Believe it or not, Jonathan says he forgot all about the money once he saw the ad. Just being part of the mix seemed to be prize enough for a moment. "I kinda didn't think about it," he said. "I totally got to sit down and watch the second half of the game. It was a phenomenal game and I was really glad to concentrate on that."
The ad cost Jonathan just $20 to make and the use of a friend's dog. He says he'll use the million to buy Huff a brand new collar, a few treats and continue to do what Super Bowl XLVI proved he does, best.
"I'm a creative person. I do graphic design work, filmmaking, photography, music. Yeah, I think it will allow me to do more of that.
And he may not have to bribe another dog to do it.
