A Campbell County teenager was attacked outside her home near Yellow Branch Elementary School Tuesday morning, prompting a modified lockdown of the school and an extensive search for the suspect, officials said.
Maj. L.T. Guthrie, of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office said the high school-aged girl told deputies a man dressed in dark clothes approached her as she was getting ready to leave for school at about 7:45 a.m.
Guthrie did not identify the teen, but said the house is on Wards Road near Calohan Road.
The girl said the man had a mask on. Guthrie said deputies are treating the case on the assumption that the attacker did not have a relationship to the student.
No one else was home at the time.
The girl was able to escape, Guthrie said. She described the man as about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a stocky build.
Deputies searched the surrounding area with canines from Bedford County and a State Police helicopter, Guthrie said.
The search Tuesday did not turn up a suspect, but Guthrie said officials are actively trying to locate him.
