Court records show Alleghany High School's boy's basketball coach, Charles "Thumper" Leitch, has had his license restricted, and is enrolled in a VASAP program, after a misdemeanor drunk driving conviction last month.
The case is ironic since Leitch is also state-certified to teach drivers education at Alleghany High School.
Leitch had no comment when reached by phone Wednesday afternoon.
The Alleghany County Schools system would only confirm that Leitch is still its boy's basketball coach at Alleghany High, and employed as a physical education teacher at Clifton Middle School.
Alleghany County Schools superintendent Dr. Sarah Campbell declined comment on Leitch's conviction, due to it being a "personnel matter."
Court records show that early on the morning of October 30, 2011, a Clifton Forge Police officer watched Leitch run a stop sign. The officer wrote that he could smell alcohol on Leitch, once the officer pulled Leitch over.
Court papers show Leitch blew an average of 0.09 on a blood alcohol test. Virginia's legal limit is 0.08.
The Mountaineers are 12-8 this season under Leitch's direction. The team reached the Region III semi-final game last season, before falling to Waynesboro.
Leitch was named the district coach of the year.
