Washington & Lee nixes elephant at mock political convention

»  Comments | Post a Comment

LEXINGTON — Washington and Lee University has canceled the appearance of an elephant in a parade at a mock political convention after an animal-rights group objected.

The convention in Lexington is being held this week to predict the 2012 Republican presidential nominee.

Norfolk-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says convention chair Tricia King told the group the elephant's rental contract has been canceled.

PETA director Delcianna Winders says the university's action sets an example.
