To say Ricky Mast likes baseball would be an understatement.
"Baseball to me is the perfect game," said Mast. "My favorite thing about it, it's the only sport where it's truly not over til it's over."
So when his sisters heard about a nationwide contest where there winners get to eat, sleep, and breathe baseball for the entire MLB season, they pushed him to step up to the plate.
"At first I kind of brushed if off," said Mast. "But the more I thought about it, I was like this could be fun."
The Atlanta Braves fan then filled out an application and sent in a "creative" video telling the MLB why he deserved a spot in their MLB Fan Cave. He admits he didn't expect to hear anything back.
"The whole idea I had with it was let's just make a funny video," said Mast.
But sure enough, the MLB called him this past week and told him out of the 22,000 entries they got, he was in their top 50.
"I did everything I could do to keep my cool on the phone," said Mast. "I was pumping my fist. I was so excited."
What's now at stake for him -- living and working in New York City during the entire 2012 season, watching all 2,340 regular season games in a tricked out room, and using blogs, cameras, and other social media to document the whole experience. As an added bonus, the MLB's biggest stars also swing by the cave to hang out and do interviews.
"What job could be better than that?" said Mast.
But to get there, he's going to need some help from the people of Southwest Virginia. As long as his video gets enough online votes to put him in the top 30, he gets to go to Arizona for Spring Training -- and an in-person, final audition.
"I'm the only Virginian in the contest," said Mast. "We need to send a Virginia boy to New York."
Mast says the competition is stiff and every vote will count.
"This would be the dream of a lifetime," said Mast.
To vote for Mast, go to www.mlbfancave.com, click on his video, then the button that says "Vote for me as a favorite."
