ROANOKE, Va. – Wedding march – check. Rose petals on the floor – check. One very large cake – check. And DJ’s – double check. The stage was set for three local couples to say their “I Do’s” on Valentine’s Day with their family, friends, and thousands of people they’ve never met listening in on the big moment.
“When she said she had applied for this, we laughed at her,” said Bernie Hamlett, who got married on K92 Tuesday morning. “Then of course, she got the last laugh.”
Having been ordained 10 years ago, K92 DJ Danny Meyers decided he needed to put his unique talents to use. So he and the rest of the “Mornin’ Thang” crew came up with an idea for a contest – have couples write in and say why they deserve a wedding, then have “Pastor Danny” marry them live on the air during a ceremony at the studio.
“We were nervous that we would have a hard time coming up with three couples,” said Meyers.
So they were pleasantly surprised when more than 100 couples turned in applications. One came from Troy Revely and his girlfriend Desiree, who had spent the money they were able to save on a house for their family rather than a wedding.
“I heard it on the radio and I was like that would be so cool,” said Desiree. “It’s the perfect Valentine’s Day gift.”
Another came from Brandon Forbes and his fiancé Ashley, who have been engaged for seven years and are expecting their third child.
“I was ready to go ahead and do it, get married,” said Brandon.
A third came from Bernie Hamlett and his fiancé Renee who have known each other for 25 years.
“I just knew it was the time,” said Renee.
The station says their stories spoke out to them the most, which is how they ended up at the K92 wedding chapel Tuesday morning.
After some reading, exchanging vows, and putting rings on each others’ fingers, all three couples sealed the deal with a kiss.
“I thought it was really nice,” said Desiree. “It was beautiful.”
Then it was time for the first dance, a reception catered by Bojangles, and cake.
“It way exceeded all of our expectations,” said Meyers.
And the couples say it was a perfect day they’ll remember forever.
