Billie Kerfoot of Vinton has been refreshing her iPad all morning Tuesday. She's been checking the Westminster Dog Show website, to see how her prized-pooch Peyton is doing.
"There are very few Springers out there that can move like he can. He's very solid, very well put together, very Spanielly,” said Kerfoot.
Peyton won another show he won last fall, but none as big as Westminster.
If you're wondering why Kerfoot is in Vinton, instead of New York, it's because she has some local people depending on her more.
He's an SOL tutor at William Byrd Middle and couldn't take off in the heat of SOL prep season.
It was later in the school day when she got the news that Peyton won “Best in Breed”, making him the top Springer Spaniel in the country.
"I was stunned. I could not believe it. I almost started to cry. I was in class with a bunch of students and they were like "Teachers aren't supposed to get text messages". I was like "I'm sorry. This is so exciting,” said Kerfoot.
Peyton's professional handler in taking care of him in the Big Apple, which means he'll go through a lot of primping to get ready for tonight's big show.
"It's just a breeder's dream come true. This dog is incredible. He's given me everything I've ever asked for and more. Anything he does tonight is icing on the cake,” said Kerfoot.
Peyton will compete in the "Sporting Dogs" group that starts the show at 8 p.m. Tuesday on the USA network. If he does well, he'll be up for "Best in Show" later in the night.
