11:15 a.m. Friday

The Grayson County Sheriff's Office just e-mailed out a longer update on the finding of missing 15-year-old Jacob Smith.

Deputies found Smith around 8:45 a.m., on Little River Road in the Baywood are of the county, less than one mile from Baywood School.

Investigators later found a makeshift shelter that Smith made under a timber lap pile.

Deputies are holding Smith as a person of interest in the fire at his home from Thursday afternoon.

9:05 a.m. Friday

  15-year-old Jacob Smith has been found, according to a text from Sheriff Richard Vaughn. He was picked up near Little River road in Baywood, less than a mile from the school.

8:05 a.m. Friday

Search continues Friday, and the sheriff's office says deputies are treating Jacob's disappearance as a runaway case.

Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughn tells me Jacob Smith is a survivalist, and could live in the woods 'for days.'

A State Police helicopter is helping with the search.

The sheriff's office says it has received tips that Smith is in Carroll County and Galax.

Jacob's family tells the sheriff's office that they have not had any problems with Jacob recently.

8:00 p.m.

The Grayson County Sheriff's Office is searching for a missing teenager.

Sheriff Richard Vaughn tells WSLS that 15-year-old Jacob Smith was last seen at his home on Haystack Road, in the Baywood area around 2:45 p.m.  He was home alone.

Then around 3:55 p.m., a passer by called in a fire at the home.

Deputies are searching the area near the home for Jacob.

He's described as:

  • 5 ft. 7 in. tall
  • Weighs 120 lbs.
  • Last seen wearing: Blue jeans, gray jacket, red shirt
