The Danville Area Humane Society is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for placing a six-week old puppy in a box and leaving it at the trash bin at Red Lobster in Danville.
A woman found the puppy, kept him overnight to feed him, and then brought him to the shelter early this morning. He is a mixed breed puppy, possibly a beagle mix.
He is eating soft food and drinking water and appears healthy.
Abandonment of a companion animal is illegal, and, in some cases, the person who abandons an animal could be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty. Class 1 misdemeanors are punishable by a jail sentence of up to 12 months, a fine of up to $2,500, either or both.
Callers may remain anonymous. Anyone with information about this puppy being abandoned is urged to call the Danville Area Humane Society at (434) 799-5306.
