IRS problems could delay tax returns

»  Comments | Post a Comment

When it’s tax season people have one thing on their minds, getting their tax refunds quickly.

But for some those refunds are getting delayed because of problems with the IRS' website.

10 On Your Side spoke with several tax preparers Thursday who said refunds have taken longer than the normal 10 t0 21 days to process.

The preparers have been told the IRS is working on the issue.

But the agency's problems don't end there.

The IRS lets people track their tax refunds 72 hours after it’s been submitted.

Even though those tax refunds have been processed by the IRS, the website said no refund information is available.

Patrick Budd is a certified public accountant and the owner Budd & Company in Roanoke.

His company has fielded plenty of phone calls from angry clients wondering where their refund is.

"It just adds a complete layer of additional layer of time that we have to deal with things,” Budd said. “The second issue is that there's nothing we can do about it."

On the IRS' website it said the agency is aware of the problem. But as long e-filers receive an acknowledgement e-mail then their tax returns have been processed.

10 On Your Side contacted a representative from the IRS who said the “Where's My Refund” page on the IRS website is now back up running.

After we interviewed Budd he said he went back and checked with several of his clients who were having problems and at least for now their refunds are showing up on the IRS’ website.
